Missouri Public Library Directors
Summer Meeting, June 8, 2008
East Central College, Union
President Cheryl Lang called the meeting to order at 9:04 at the East Central College in Union, Missouri.
Minutes: Noted correction in Ray Hall's name and correction to reference to Missouri Consolidated Public Healthcare Plan. Ray Hall moved to accept the minutes with corrections. Mary Beth Revels seconded. Motion passed: all ayes.
Treasurer Report - Jackie Thomas
- The trend continues: "We made some, we spent some."
- Membership is at 66. Last year we had 57 and in 2006 we were at 87.
- After the expenses are paid for this conference, it's estimated that we'll have a balance of $6,283.67. Kent still needs to be paid. We're breaking even on the conference but we aren't making enough on memberships to break even in paying Ken.
- After much discussion on conference and membership fees, Judy Garrett moved that the conference fee be increased by $10. Sallie Hancox seconded. Motion passed: all ayes.
Nominating Committee - Steve Campbell & Charles Pace
- The slate of officers for the upcoming year is:
- President: Karen Hayden
- Vice - President: Susan Wray
- Secretary - Steve Campbell
- Treasurer - Jackie Thomas
- Eva Dunn moved to accept the slate of officers as presented. Jackie Thomas seconded. Motion passed: all ayes.
Misc.
- Steve Gardner's presentation on property taxes was discussed further. Liz Cashell noted we all needed to be talking about a research project on taxes with the lead being taken by DOLLS. Eva Dunn moved that if the survey comes about $500 may be authorized by the MPLD President to be paid toward the project from MPLD funds. Liz seconded. Motion passed: 43 ayes, 1 nay
- There was a long discussion about concerns dealing with the Missouri Library Association and how it isn't representing the membership as a whole. Mary Beth Revels is the current Chair of the Public Library Division. Please take concerns to her. Pam Klipsch pointed out if MLA would fold or lose a number of memberships, we are at risk of losing our connection to ALA. Several pointed out that the conference has out priced a number of smaller libraries to the point of not attending. Jackie Thomas wondered if we need a conference every other year to focus on public library issues and continuing education. It is believed that money is driving the MLA, not needs. It is believed that Library Advocacy Day is vital and shouldn't be seen as a money maker, but an advocacy expense. Due to the length of the discussion it was decided to move the discussion to the listserv.
