Electronic ResourcesThe Henry County Library connects to the Internet through the services of MOREnet, the Missouri Research & Education Network. MOREnet, assisted by funding from the Missouri General Assembly, provides patrons of the Henry County Library access to a number of on-line databases, including EBSCOhost, Newsbank, Gale Discoving Collection ,Learning Express Library, Annenberg Media and the Netsmartz Workshop. The Library itself subscribes directly to several additional databases, including Teen Health and Wellness, AncestryLibrary and Heritage Quest. EBSCOhostEBSCOhost provides access to full-text information on a broad range of topics including general interest, business, health and multi-cultural. Age-appropriate publications, references and interfaces are available for both younger and older students. Information in EBSCOhost is from current and authoritative journals, magazines, pamphlets, newsletters and reference books on a wide variety of topics. EBSCOhost Web:
SearchasaurusSearchasaurus is an animated interface with a dinosaur theme for elementary or middle school students, accessing a full text database for elementary school research and reading.Kids SearchSearch interface designed for students in grades K through 5. Searches American Heritage Dictionary, EBSCO Animals, Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, Newspaper Source and Primary Search. Includes Teacher Research interface, which searches Academic Search Elite. Kids Search makes it easy for students to search by keyword or by topic to find the most useful search results. Results can be easily sorted by source type - magazines, reference books, photos, flags, etc.Student research CenterSearch interface designed for students in grades 6 through 12. Searches MAS Ultra - School Edition, Newspaper Source, Health Source: Consumer Edition, American Heritage Dictionary and Columbia Encyclopedia. Includes Teacher Research interface, which searches Academic Search Elite.NewspapersThrough NewsBank™, Library patrons have access to archives from nearly a dozen major newspapers, including The Kansas City Star, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch and The Springfield News-Leader. Other newspapers available through NewsBank include: The Chicago Tribune; The Christian Science Monitor; The Des Moines Register; The Los Angeles Times; The Louisville Courier Journal; The Tulsa World; The Washington Post; and The Wichita Eagle. EBSCO's Newspaper Source™ also provides selected full text for 25 national (U.S.) and international newspapers. The database also contains full text television & radio news transcripts, and selected full text for more than 260 regional (U.S.) newspapers. Gale Discovering CollectionThe Gale Discovering Collection offers thousands of overview essays, critical analyses, biographies, primary sources, creative works and multimedia elements make it easy for students to research papers and class assignments in five core subject areas: history, literature, biography, science and social studies. Learning Express LibraryLearning Express Library is designed to help people succeed on the tests they must pass to gain citizenship, improve their testing skills or to further their education or career. Over 300 online academic and licensing practice tests including SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, Advanced Placement, civil service, military, real estate, law enforcement, citizenship, TOEFL, ESL and basic skills for elementary, middle and high school skills improvement and much more. Test preparation materials span ages from elementary through adult. This testing resource also provides instant scoring and customized feedback. Annenberg MediaAnnenberg Media provides access to professional development materials for educators. The resources are free, and include video-on-demand, live streaming video events, and other materials available for purchase. The site also provides access to the Annenberg Channel, a free satellite channel for schools, libraries, colleges, universities, and other public access channels. NetSmartz WorkshopThe NetSmartz Workshop is an online interactive, educational safety resource that teaches kids and teens how to stay safer on the Internet. NetSmartz creates high-impact educational activities that are well received by even the most tech-savvy kids. Parents, guardians, educators and law enforcement have access to additional resources for learning and teaching about the dangers children may face online. Teen Health and WellnessTeen Health and Wellness: Real life, Real Answers is a comprehensive database that allows teens (and those who care about teens) to research health-related issues important to their well-being, It is both a research/ report tool and a self-help resource. Henry County library patrons may now access this database through the library web page. The homepage includes several high-interest, topical features that are updated on an ongoing basis.
The database also features an easy to use Search and Browse, section. You can search for an article, browse by subject or even use the A-Z topic search. After you locate your article it can be easily printed or emailed to your address. Another handy feature is the Cite This Article button, which will display the article citation in MLA (Modern Language Association) format. Come see what's new for you at the Library. Teen Health and Wellness: Real life, Real Answers Genealogy on the InternetDo you have an interest in family genealogy? Would you like to find out more about your relatives? The Henry County Library has expanded the Internet Genealogy Resources available to patrons in the Electronic Media Resources Roomto include both Ancestry Library and Heritage Quest Online. Ancestry Library allows you to search the 1790-1930 Census records, the United Kingdom census records, the Social Security Death Index, Civil War Service Records, World War I Draft Registration Records, Immigrant Passenger Lists and many other databases; new databases are added every month. With Heritage Quest you can search the Census records from 1790 to 1930, search for information in over 25,000 family and local histories, search the Revolutionary War pension and land bounty records and access the Persi™ (Periodical Source Index) database, a comprehensive subject index covering over 6,500 genealogy and local history periodicals. The Internet Access Startup screen, which appears when Firefox is started on one of the EMR Internet Computers, contains direct links to the Ancestry Library and Heritage Quest web sites.
