Printing from the Internet Computers
The Internet-capable computers in the Electronic Media Resources (EMR) Room print over the local network to printers which are located in the File Room adjacent to the Reference Desk.
Please note that the one printer actually located in the EMR Room is connected ONLY to the Microfilm Reader/Scanner. It is NOT on the network and does not and CAN NOT print material from the Internet-capable computers.
The charge for printing is:
- 10 cents per page for Black and White pages.
- 25 cents per page for Color pages
You are responsible for ALL pages printed. Be aware that what is a single page in your internet browser may print out as multiple pages; use the Print Preview function (under the File Menu) to find out how many pages will print from a given web page before actually printing it. It is usually possible to print only specified pages or only the selected and highlighted text on a web page. Some web pages may not print correctly except through a Print This Page link on the page; other pages simply may not print correctly at all due to the way the page has been set up. Adobe .pdf files, such as Federal and State Tax Forms, should be printed using the Printer Icon in the Adobe plugin, as they may not print correctly from the browser's own Print Icon, or from the Print command under the File menu.
In order to print material follow these steps:
- Click on the Print Icon on the program's Toolbar (it looks like a little printer) or go to the Menu Bar at the top of the program and click first on File and then on Print. This will bring up the Print Dialog Box. If you wish to see how the printing will look, go to the Menu Bar at the top of the program and click first on File and then on Print Preview, if it is there. This will bring up the Print Preview window (on programs that have the Print Preview function - not all programs have this), giving an overview of how the material will be printed. If you only need a portion of the material, the Print Preview window will enable you to determine which pages contain the material you want. Click on the Print button on the Print Preview print; this will bring up the Print Dialog Box.
- Near the top of the Dialog box will be a box marked "Name:" Clicking on the small triangle at the right side of this box will bring up a list of the available printers. Currently there are two printers that can be used with the Internet computers:
- HP Laserjet 4100 PCL 6 - prints in black and white at 10¢ per page
- Color Photo - prints in color at 25¢ a page
For technical reasons, there may be additional printers in the list on some of the Internet computers; only the printers listed above will actually work.
- Click on whichever of the printers you wish to use. The default (the printer that will be used if you don't actively select another) is the HP Laserjet 4100 PCL 6. It is considerably faster than the Color Photo but may not render color pictures or complex color graphics very well.
- If the Color Photo Printer is not in the list, Click on the Add Printer Icon to bring up the Add Printer Wizard. Click on Next. Select Network Printer and click on Next. Type
\\standalone\colorphoto in the Printer Name Box and click on Next. Highlight OK and click on Finish, after which the Color Photo printer icon should be available.
- If you wish to print only a portion of the material go the the lower left corner of the Dialog Box and click in the circular button marked Pages. Then enter the number of the 1st page you want printed in the box immediately to the right of the Pages button, marked from and the number of the last page you want printed in the box to the right of that, marked to.
- When you have selected the printer and pages to be printed, Click on the OK button on the lower right hand side of the Print Dialog Box. The material will now be transferred to the Print Server machine in the File Room and then printed.
- Neither printer makes enough noise to be heard from in the EMR Room. If you have clicked on the OK button to print and are not sure whether anything has happened, ask the staff person at the Reference Desk to see whether you information is being printed. If there is no one at the Reference Desk, check at the front Circulation Desk and they will get someone to check the printer system.
- Pick up your printed pages from the staff member on duty at the Reference Desk. You are responsible for ALL pages printed. If there is no one at the Reference Desk, check at the front Circulation Desk and they will get someone to check the printer system.
For reasons of privacy and security patrons may not go behind the Reference Desk or into the Reference File Room.
