GED Connection / Workplace Essential Skills tapesThe Henry County Library has received a grant from the Missouri State Library. Through a partnership with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Henry County Library was presented a grant for G.E.D. and Work Place Essential Skills videocassettes and workbooks. Liz Cashell, director of Library Services, states, "I am very excited to be involved in this partnership between the Missouri State Library, area educators and the Henry County Library." The materials are available through a statewide educational use license from Kentucky Educational Television supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Library Services and Technology Act. There are videotapes with workbooks to coincide with all topics. Individuals or Instructors may check out these materials from the circulation collection. They will also be available for public use in the reference area and may be viewed using the library's TV/VCR. The Workplace Essential Skills materials consist of 25 video programs designed to improve employment eligibility. Topics in this program include: Matching Skills and Jobs, Applying for a Job and Co-workers and Supervisors. The "soft skills" lessons in the Workplace Essential Skills program will be useful for job seekers, career centers, and workplace readiness programs. The GED Connection program includes 39 videotapes and corresponding workbooks. These studies are geared for students with about a tenth grade reading level who are studying for the GED exam. Some materials contained in this program are: Language skills, World History, Fractions, Grammar and Usage, Economics, and Geometry. There are also lessons that focus on study strategies and test taking skills to use when preparing for the Writing, Social Studies, Reading, Science and Math sections of the GED exam. The library believes that these materials will provide a valuable service to the population of our county.
