1840
- Census population is 4,726 persons, including 4 free colored persons and 636 slaves. This figure covers both Rives and St. Clair counties, which were counted together.
- 15 grade schools in operation in Rives and St. Clair Counties.
- February: Cedar Township is organized. This included all of what is now Cedar, Dade and Lawrence Counties, which at the time were attached to Rives County for civil and military purposes.
- July: Deepwater Township organized. Beginning at Van Buren (Cass) county line, down the divide between Grand River and Deepwater Creek to the Range line bewteeen Ranges 25 and 26, thence south to St. Clair line, west to southwest corner of county, then back to start. Included all of Deepwater, Walker and Bear Creek, and parts of Davis, Fairview and Clinton. A little later the portions in Clinton and Fairview were removed.

1841
- Tebo Baptist Church built, in what is now Leesville Township.
- January 29: St. Clair County removed from the jurisdiction of Rives County.
- February 15: The Missouri legislature changes the name of Rives County to Henry County, to honor Patrick Henry of Virginia. John C. Rives of Virginia had back Whig candidate William Henry Harrison for President in the 1840 election and the heavily Democratic population of Rives County petitioned the legislature to remove his name from their county.
- April 14: University of Missouri opened at Columbia.

- Assessed valuation of Henry County is recorded as $197,059, with 505 polls.

- Assessed valuation of Henry County is $351,308.
- Federal Land office opened at Clinton.
- February: A second well is completed in the Clinton court house yard.

- November: Patent to county seat of Clinton finally received by the county court.

- First fence erected around the courthouse, including 1 acre of grounds.
- May 2: Start of Mexican War
- May: First bridge completed in Henry County, over the Grand River at Big Ripple, on the road from Clinton to the Harmony Mission. It cost $1,479.
- July 31: First hanging in Henry County, James Lester, hung for the murder of Scott D. King.

- Lutheran Synod of Missouri organized
- December 20: St. Louis connected to east by telegraph.

- February 2: End of Mexican War.

1849
- U. S. Supreme Court finally settles the dispute over the Missouri - Iowa boundary. The disputed area is divided more or less in half.
- March 12: Missouri Pacific Railroad chartered.
- Spring: Gold rush to California. Approximately 50,000 persons traveled to California via the Overland route; a large percentage of them passed through Missouri, departing from the river towns of Independence, Westport and St. Joseph.
