City of Clinton - South Side Maps

All of these maps were scanned from copies made from the 1895 Plat Book of Henry County.
This portion covers the trackage from Grand River Street on the north to Henry Street (south of Allen Street) on the south.

Both of the Missouri Kansas & Texas (Katy) and Kansas City Clinton & Springfield (Leaky Roof) depots are shown; the Katy depot is at the foot of Washington Street, south of Ohio and the Leaky Roof depot is to the west.

The Kracke Mill buildings are located south of Clinton street between the KCC&S and MK&T tracks, in the block marked "8". The White Swam Mill is on the north side of Allen Street, east of the MK&T, in the block marked "12". This map shows the track through this mill going south across Allen Street; by 1916 this track ended on the north side of Allen.

The track which served the Farmers Elevator was not laid until well after this map; it ran essentially on the east side of Washington Street as far south as Allen. Washington Street north of Wilson Street is now part of the Farmers Elevator grounds.

South Side - Northeast Part High Resolution Version
South Side - Southwest Part High Resolution Version This portion shows the trackage from Allen Street south past the crossing of the KCC&S and MK&T lines at South Tower. It overlaps the above map by about a block.

The connecting track from the KCC&S line to the MK&T in 1895 ran from the KCC&S line at Allen Street south to the MK&T line near Henry Street. By 1914 this had been reversed to run from the KCC&S at Allen Street north to the MK&T near Wilson Street. The later arrangement permitted trains to come off the KCC&S onto the MK&T and proceed to North Clinton without having to make a siwtch back move through the KCC&S yards. This made it much easier for the KCC&S and Frisco to exchange equipment and also facilitated detour moves which might need to get from the MK&T to the KCC&S. The connecting track at the MK&T and KCC&S Crossing and the siding on the KCC&S south of the tower seem to have been removed before 1916. South Tower, located at the crossing, was built sometime after the 1895 date of this map.

The KCC&S enginehouse and tracks, which were located just to the east of the junction of the Kansas City and Springfield legs of the Depot Spur Wye, are not shown on the map for the simply reason that they were not built until December, 1895, after the Plat Book was printed. The shop facilities at Clinton were added in 1915. Enginehouse and shop were removed in 1925 or 1926 after all work was transferred to the former Blair Line facilities at North Clinton.

The MK&T and KCC&S stock yards are not shown on the map. The KCC&S yards were on the west side of main line north of Rogers Street. The MK&T yards were on the west side of the MK&T line, just south of Tebo Street.

Artesian Park High Resolution Version This portion of the map is located somewhat west of the above section, extending from Allen Street south to past Rogers, from the city limits west.

The line of the street railway to the Artesian Hotel is shown. The old road and streetcar line appear to run south from Allen through the site of the present National Guard Armory before turning southwest towards the Artesian Hotel.

The road pattern shown in the eastern part of the park (east of Town Creek) is quite different from that currently in place, and no roads are shown in the west part of the park at all. The horse racing track is located in the western part of the park, extending, with the grandstand (which is off this map to the west) along the south side of the south part of the track.
