Clinton Eye, Saturday, May 5, 1888

Street Railway
The city council yesterday at an adjourned session granted a 30 years franchise to the Clinton Street Railway Company, to construct and operate a street railway, commencing at the north end of 5th Street, near the K.C. & S. depot, and thence south to Franklin street, on to the northwest corner of the square, south to the depots and west to Orchard Avenue. south to Allen street and west to city limits, crossing the Gulf railroad at grade and on to the well; the fare will not exceed 5 cents. The interests of the city are well protected in every way. Work will be commenced by the first of July and the road will be completed as soon as practicable.

The K.C. & S. will run excursions from Osceola to Clinton every Sunday this month, at one fare for the round trip. Train leaves Osceola at 9 a.m., and returning leaves Clinton at about 5 p.m.

A large force is at work on the street car line to-day. Two cars arrived Saturday and a large quantity of rails and other materials is on hand.

The street car line is pushing along well and will be completed to the well in a few days.

The street car track has climbed the ascent on Allen street and will be near the well on quitting time tonight. The Cars will be put on next week.

The curve at the corner of Washington street and Ohio, had to be re-laid yesterday morning before the street cars could get around it safely.

Notwithstanding the mud and the miserable condition of the road bed the streetcars did a good business yesterday and operated the cars until 10 o'clock at night.

The streetcar line was completed to the Well yesterday, and the workmen are now engaged in building the line around the Square. It will be completed to the Woods Hotel by tomorrow night.

The Street Railway will be completed around the square in a few days. Mr. Jones is a hummer. He is business at all times, and Clinton has a daisy of a street car line.

H. P. Faris went to Kansas City this morning to purchase a summer car, which will be put on the street car line next week. Three cars will then be in operation.

The new engine and new cars received by the K. C. & S. railway are fine specimens of workmanship. The passenger coaches are fine ones.

The gauge of the truck under the summer car purchased in Kansas City did not conform to that of the railway here and the car is laid off until new wheels can be secured.

Rumors are rife in railroad circles at Little Rock, Ark to the effect that there is a movement on foot for the construction of another railroad from Springfield, Mo. via Little Rock, to Memphis, Tenn. It is said that the enterprise is back by John I. Blair, of New Jersey, who is interested in the Kansas City & Southern, now running from Kansas City to Osceola, passing through this city. A party of engineers are said to be already in the field, going over the proposed route.

Cars will leave Franklin School House for the Artesian Well, commencing at 7 a.m., and every half hour thereafter, until 7:30 p.m.
Returning, the last car will leave the well for the city at 8 p.m.

Work on the streetcar stables near the Gulf House is being pushed rapidly.

The bridge across the Gulf Road leading to the Artesian Well has been completed, but the approaches don't seem to connect. The bridge is now perfectly safe - from travel.

John Carey is framing the street car barn. It will be 34x60 and 16 feet high and located just north of the Gulf House.

The bridge over the Gulf track at McLane street stands as a silent sentinel. No vandal hoof of animal has soiled its roadway.

Clinton Eye, November 10, 1888

The K.C. & S. will put through trains to Kansas City about the middle of next week. The road is doing a good freight business, and travel over that line will be very much increased,

The Street Railway Company will put heaters in the cars, and passengers can go over that line the coldest day that blows with comfort.

Clinton Eye, December 8, 1888

The Kansas City & Southern will put on through trains to Kansas City, Monday, leaving Osceola at 6 o'clock a.m., arrives here at 7, reaching Kansas City at 11 a.m. The train in the evening leaves at 5 and reaches here at 9 and Osceola at 10. The road will do a good business from the start and be a great help to the country northwest of town.

Clinton Eye, December 15, 1888

The 'Frisco road, it has been reported, contemplates purchasing the K.C. & S. road. A Corps of surveyors are at work between Osceola and Bolivar.
