The recruitment process is to assure full enrollment in the Head Start Program. The Head Start regulations state that the number of applications taken must exceed our funded enrollment by 20 percent. Applications are to be taken on as many Head Start eligible families within the recruitment areas as possible and are to be taken throughout the course of the program year. This procedure allows for a waiting list to be established so as vacancies occur, the slots may be filled as quickly as possible. Recruitment of children shall include a priority of 10 percent enrollment of children with disabilities. 90 percent of the children recruited must be from income eligible families. Our program's total funded enrollment is for 445 children. The Head Start Program is required to maintain an average daily attendance of 85 percent, therefore, vacancies must be filled in a timely manner.
Recruitment efforts for the next program year will begin in February 1997. At that time our Family Specialist will begin to re-enroll mid-March, our Family Specialist will begin taking applications on all other eligible children to fill remaining slots, and to ensure a waiting list for each center or home base option. Applications can be taken at the parent's home or their local Head Start center.
Names of eligible families may be obtained from a variety of community resources.
In addition, posters and pamphlets will be provided to each Family Specialist to be placed at Division of Family Services, Parents As Teachers, County Health Department/WIC, Public School, Public Housing Authority and other areas in the community.
